The feature film “Water and Garri” is available on Prime Video today. 10 May 2024… Tiwa Savage, the self-proclaimed “Queen of Afrobeats,” releases the music to her feature film “Water & Garri” today. The soundtrack to Everything Savage and Unbound Studio’s feature film was released by EMPIRE on the same day that it debuted on Amazon Prime Video. Along with ten original songs by Tiwa, the immersive and fascinating soundtrack CD was curated by Savage and features performers from the Afropop, R&B, and Hip Hop genres. Grammy-nominated performers Olamide and Ayra Starr, ASA, Cameroonian singer-songwriter Richard Bona, gospel artist Zacardi Cortez, and emerging artists Black Sherif, Young Jonn, Mystro Sugar, and The Cavemen are among the featured artists on the album. “The soundtrack makes heavy use of live instrumentation and ambient sound effects to create an immersive experience while Tiwa returns with her signature overtone-singing,” stated Variety magazine. “The project includes an array of sonic elements from Afrobeat and Afropop to amapiano to R&B, gospel, and hints of mainstream trap and pop.” “People expect a certain sound from me, but in doing a soundtrack, I could experiment,” says Savage. “African culture I either put it in my fashion or put it in my music, always. It’s because it’s beautiful to be African,” Tiwa’s artistic trajectory takes a significant turn with the release of the Water & Garri film, which also serves as her first leading part in a feature film and executive producer. Savage plays the major part of Aisha, an ambitious fashion designer who returns to her hometown of “Eastside” after ten years away from home in the United States. The film and song work together to portray profound societal upheavals and personal concerns. Aisha returns home to find everything significantly changed, tensions high, and violence on the rise. She has to learn to live with her wounds and face the shame she left behind as she makes new connections with her loved ones, old friends, and her former partner. Director Meji Alabi’s film, which was shot in Cape Coast, Ghana, features compelling storytelling and photography. Starring in the play are Jemima Osunde (New Money), Andrew Bunting (Dynamite), and Mike Afolarin (Far From Home). Tiwa commemorated the tenth anniversary of her groundbreaking debut album “Once Upon A Time” in July of 2023. Her remarkable talent was evident in the album, which not only signaled the start of her prosperous career but also helped her rise to prominence as one of Africa’s most important musicians. Following this, the songs R.E.D. (2015), Sugarcane E.P. (2017), Celia (2020), and Water & Garri EP (2021) were released, amassing over one billion plays on all platforms. In the music industry, Tiwa has worked with international artists such as Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Beyoncé on songs like “The Gift” and “Black Is King,” Nas, Brandy, Sam Smith, Omarion, Wizkid, and Davido. She sold out two successful tours of North America and Europe in 2018, made history as the first female winner of the MTV European Music Award for Best African Act, and represented The Commonwealth in 2023 at the British Monarch King Charles II’s coronation concert. Savage will perform as the main act in London’s Wembley Arena in 2025.
